Reasonable Accommodation

Notice of Reasonable Accommodations for Applicants with Disabilities

It is the Housing Authority of the City of Niceville's legal obligation to provide "reasonable accommodations" to applicants if they or any family members have a disability. A reasonable accommodation is some modification or change NHA can make to its apartments or procedures that will assist an otherwise eligible applicant with a disability to take advantage of NHA's programs.

Reasonable accommodations are made in response to individual requests from a qualified person with disabilities.

Under fair housing laws, a person is considered disabled if s/he has a sensory, mental, or physical condition that substantially limits one or more major life activities (such as walking, seeing, hearing, working, etc.). The state law definition includes disabilities that are temporary, permanent, common, uncommon, mitigated, or unmitigated.

Accommodations, administrative and/or structural, are intended to afford the disabled person equal opportunity to use and enjoy the dwelling unit, and common use areas; or to provide the qualified individual with disabilities an opportunity to participate in, or benefit from the housing, aid, benefit, or service that is equal to that afforded to others, provided that the accommodation is reasonable (i.e., does not cause undue financial burdens or cause a fundamental alteration in the nature of the housing program).

An applicant family that has a member with a disability must still be able to meet essential obligations of tenancy, but there is no requirement that they be able to do this without assistance.

If you or a family member have a disability and think you might need or want a reasonable accommodation, you may request it at any time in the application process or at any time you need an accommodation. This is up to you. If you would prefer not to discuss your situation with the housing authority, that is your right.

You may obtain a Request for Accommodation form from the Niceville Housing Authority located at 500 Boyd Circle, Niceville, FL 32578.
